Collection: Corey Moraes

Corey Moraes is a Northwest Coast artist, born in Seattle, U.S and currently residing in Vancouver, Canada. Corey can not really attribute his creative talent to anybody in his family really. Ever since he had his son though, who is named after him, the talent and creativity was passed on. In earlier times, Corey seeked inspiration through branding and album covers. He was interested in them as they represented a universal language. And that's what Corey really strives to achieve in his art, to create elements in a contemporary context with a traditional foundation. Top influences included but were not limited to Picasso, Dali and Michelangelo.

While growing up, Corey moved homes quite a bit, while his mother always tried to keep continuity in their home by having Northwest Coast art in every house, and room. Pat Dixon jewellery carver, was a part of his family, who when sketching, was a huge influence of Indgineous art for young Corey. When it comes to later influences, Corey got into every art form that exists.

Corey doesn’t believe in the idea of pricing his art by the pound. What you're purchasing, when you're getting Corey’s work, is a chapter or a portion of his life that he is sharing with the world.

“To me, my work is an expression. It's an inclusion into the universe. I strive to create something that resonates with people on more than just a visual level. We're under constant change, nothing is permanent and change is something that often scares people. So I think that that unsettling aspect of art is also what draws me to it. My own personal growth, my own understanding, my emotional intellect, my place in this universe.”

You will see in Corey’s collection, that some pieces are very masculine. His designs go beyond the Killer Whale and Raven, but focus traditional medicines, including mushroom earrings and cedar bow.

Corey hopes that whoever purchases his art, knows that they are not purchasing family history, not purchasing a personal grasp but what they are purchasing is the beginning of a journey, a journey of self, a journey of investigation, and a journey of connection.

“I believe that everybody is born an artist. And the challenge is to remain one as you mature.”
