The ancient Babylonians divided the sky into twelve segments, using observation and calculations. Each of the twelve segments were assigned a figure, a name, and a specific meaning. This concept evolved into what we now know as the zodiac. For centuries, these signs have carried deep personal and cultural significance, especially in Western culture. To many, the zodiac signs represent identity and self-understanding.
My interest in creating a series based on the zodiac signs stemmed from a desire to explore the symbolic meanings for each sign. As I began each piece, I reflected on the people in my life who were born under that sign. I considered who they are as a person, and how they understand themselves. The ideas of ego, identity, and self-knowledge have always intrigued me.
I was raised between two worlds, two ways of knowing and understanding reality. This project was inspired by my Gitksan traditional roots to reinterpret the zodiac. Through this process, I’m weaving together personal dualities: the spiritual and the cultural, the modern and the ancestral. This work is not just about the zodiac, it's about identity, and finding connection between seemingly separate worlds.
