Collection: John Velten

John Velten is a multidisciplinary artist based in Vancouver, British Columbia, whose work spans across various mediums including mural painting, digital art, and fashion design. With a diverse background in 3D modelling, animation, and fine arts, Velten's practice is characterized by a fusion of traditional and contemporary techniques, often exploring themes of cultural identity, heritage, and social justice.

Velten's artistic journey began with an apprenticeship under renowned Indigenous artist Alano Edzerza, where he honed his skills in fine arts and developed a deep appreciation for Indigenous culture and storytelling. This foundational experience laid the groundwork for Velten's subsequent explorations into various artistic disciplines.

In 2022, Velten was recognized as a recipient of the Indigenous Arts Program: Individual Artists grant from the First People’s Cultural Council, affirming his commitment to preserving and celebrating Indigenous art forms in his work. Additionally, Velten has participated in mentorship programs such as the Vancouver Indigenous Fashion Week Youth Mentorship Program, where he’s been mentored through continuous development of VIFW.

Velten's art has been showcased in numerous exhibitions and galleries across Vancouver, including "Shared Perspectives" at The Pace, the Vancouver Public Library's celebration of Islamic History Month, and the Contemporary Art Gallery's "Line of Purpose" exhibition. His innovative approach to digital form line art was featured in a virtual exhibition titled "Digital Formline," highlighting his ability to push the boundaries of traditional Indigenous art forms into the digital realm.

In addition to his gallery work, Velten is known for his vibrant public murals, which adorn city streets and public spaces throughout Vancouver. From the dynamic Art Wrap installation for the City of Vancouver to the striking Lunar Festival Lantern Design and the impactful Vancouver City Centre Station Mural.

Beyond the public realm, Velten has also lent his artistic vision to various private commissions, including collaborations with corporate clients such as EY Creative and Foundry Vancouver. His work has been featured in publications such as Van Mag and Vancouver is Awesome, further solidifying his reputation as a rising artist in the Vancouver art scene.

Driven by a passion for storytelling and a commitment to community engagement, John Velten continues to push the boundaries of artistic expression, using his art as a platform for dialogue, reflection, and cultural exchange. Through his work, Velten seeks to inspire and empower others while celebrating the rich tapestry of cultures that define Vancouver's vibrant artistic landscape.
